A Museum Turned Into an Escape Experience

Escape Museum Kajžnkova Hiša is a unique escape game that unfolds throughout the entire museum and thoughtfully incorporates original exhibits into the gameplay.

While the digitalization of Slovenian tourism is rapidly progressing, another powerful trend is taking place in parallel — the gamification of museums, heritage sites, and tourist destinations.

In collaboration with Tourism Kranjska Gora and the Gornjesavski Museum Jesenice, we created one of the most exciting new attractions in the region — and beyond. The result is Slovenia’s first-ever escape museum.

What Makes an Escape Museum Different?

Unlike a traditional escape room, the game takes place throughout the museum, weaving together authentic exhibits, historical facts, and local folklore from Rateče.

Rather than disrupting the museum, the escape game complements it — the puzzles are integrated among the displays and use museum elements as part of the experience. Players observe carefully, connect details, and uncover stories hidden within the exhibition.

Design and Development

The development process began not on-site, but in-depth within the museum’s core themes and collections. We studied how Kajžnkova Hiša presents local heritage and how temporary exhibitions fit into the space.

Next, we engaged with locals and tourism experts from Kranjska Gora to capture authentic stories, memories, and customs.
From this, we crafted the game structure, storyline, and user flow, aligning everything with the museum’s identity.

The result includes five thematic storylines:

  • The Rateče Manuscript
  • Local cuisine of “Kranjska Siberia”
  • Traditional Rateče costume
  • Smuggling routes
  • Planica – the cradle of ski jumping

Mechanics and Gameplay

The game allows up to five teams to play simultaneously, supports four languages, and operates without additional staff or a game master.
Each puzzle is self-resetting, returning automatically to its initial state.

Great care was taken to ensure that the game elements feel like part of the exhibition rather than external installations. Materials, colors, and craftsmanship all match the museum’s aesthetic — so even a casual visitor can still freely explore the museum without disturbance.

Start Anywhere in the Museum

Players can begin their adventure anywhere in the museum.

Their mission: to complete the diary of the main character, Josip Lavtižar — a prominent local figure in Slovenian history — and unlock the door to his room.

The full experience lasts about one hour and is suitable for couples, families, school groups, and experienced escape players.

With our help, Kajžnkova Hiša has become Slovenia’s first escape museum, where history is discovered through interactive play spread across the entire exhibition space.
