A Fortress Steeped in History

Perched high above the emerald Kolpa River, Kostel Castle (pronounced Kôstel) is Slovenia’s second largest castle complex, right after Celje Castle. For centuries, it stood as a vital defensive point, especially during the Ottoman invasions. Its position within an ancient beacon system once served as the medieval version of “SMS alerts” — fiery signals warning of enemy attacks across the land.

Visible already from the main road descending toward the Croatian border, the fortress crowns a sharp hill overlooking the Kolpa canyon. Its stone walls have seen countless stories of power, struggle, and resilience since its first recorded mention in 1336. The nearby gallows hill still whispers tales of a time when the castle held its own court of law — and justice was swift and final.

A Reborn Landmark for Modern Visitors

In recent years, Kostel Castle has undergone impressive restoration, opening its gates to thousands of visitors annually. Despite its breathtaking location, the area remains a hidden gem — awaiting more experiences that invite travelers to stay longer and dive deeper.

Yet, step by step, the story of Kostel is coming back to life. The majestic fortress walls, panoramic views stretching for kilometers, and the echoes of its turbulent past leave no visitor untouched.

Tourism by the Kolpa River

The broader Kostel region offers everything for sustainable tourism: pristine nature, outdoor sports, kayaking, rafting, fishing, hunting, and eco-farming. With an increasing number of accommodations and local initiatives, the castle experience perfectly complements the region’s growing tourism potential.

A Game Rooted in Historical Facts

Working with our client Lisac & Lisac, we began by researching the authentic stories surrounding Kostel Castle — not only those recorded in official archives but also the legends still whispered among locals. Even Valvasor mentioned the fortress in his Topographia Ducatus Carnioliae Modernae, though written records remain scarce compared to other Slovenian castles.

This inspired us to anchor the entire game in verified historical facts, blending them with a narrative arc worthy of a legend. The storyline carries players through centuries of mystery and into the Inauguration Chamber, the symbolic heart of the experience.

The Storyline: The Secret Brotherhood

Hidden deep in the forested hills above the Kolpa River stands a castle that guards a centuries-old secret — one known only to a mysterious brotherhood.

Welcome to an era of kings and queens, of peasant uprisings and noble families. Welcome to “The Secret Brotherhood”, an escape adventure that invites you to prove your worth and earn your place among its members.

Not Your Typical Escape Room

The Kostel Castle Escape Game is far from the classic escape room experience. It’s an interactive adventure that tests teamwork, logic, and steady hands — an educational yet thrilling challenge for all generations.

Because the castle is a protected cultural monument, we faced unique design challenges:

🕹 No electricity – every puzzle is fully mechanical, crafted from wood.
🔁 Self-resetting – the game automatically resets without staff intervention.
🧱 No drilling – all elements are removable and installed without touching the original structure.
🌍 Language-free design – international visitors can play without translation.
👥 Single & multiplayer modes – up to 4 teams (2–5 players each) can compete simultaneously.
Each challenge includes a handcrafted wooden info panel, laser-engraved on birch wood. One of the highlights — a wooden labyrinth built from over 200 pieces — hides a clever secret that players will have to uncover themselves.

Practical Information

  • Suitable for ages 14+ (younger with adults).
